The First Aid Squad (SFAS) headquarters is located at 115 Haddon Avenue at the intersection of Laurel Street. The building was formerly known as the Sanders Metal Shop when it was purchased in 1964. The building was renovated to add a meeting room in 1973 and a large two-bay garage was added in 1982. Our headquarters features a small kitchen, a radio and computer center, meeting room, garage and equipment storage.

The Squad operates two ambulances. Unit 4556 is a 2007 Braun Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and Unit 4557 is a 1998 Braun (ERV). We alternate calls between the two vehicles so that the wear is balanced. Each vehicle is used on almost 300 calls a year. We use both ambulances when we have multiple calls at the same time and when we have multi-patient incidents. As part of the Monmouth County Mutual Aid Agreements, we may take one ambulance out of town to help another municipality while maintaining the second ambulance to cover the residents of Shrewsbury.

Organization

The Shrewsbury First Aid Squad is a 501(c)(3) public charity staffed entirely by volunteers and governed by a Board of Trustees.  All donations to the Squad are fully tax deductible.  The Squad is a member of the Monmouth County Association of First Aid Squads and the 16th District of the New Jersey State First Aid Council.

The squad members annually elect corporate and operations officers.

We Need Your Help!

Membership Applications can be downloaded from this site or obtained from the Borough Clerk's office and mailed to P.O. Box 262 Shrewsbury, NJ 07702

To become a member, you may submit an application, downloadable from this site, which will be reviewed by the membership committee.   The committee will interview the candidate and then make a recommendation to the Squad.

Once accepted, new members have one year to complete a professional-level CPR class and the Emergency Medical Technician - Basic Level (EMT-B) training program offered at several locations around Monmouth County. All members also participate in various continuing education programs and training drills, most of which are conducted at squad headquarters. Financial Support

The squad is funded through two principal sources.  The largest single source of annual revenue comes from the residents and businesses in Shrewsbury by way of the annual fund drive run by the Squad each August.  This direct mail appeal produces more than one-half of the squad’s required revenue.  In addition, many whom we directly serve during the year are gracious enough to send us a gift in their name or that of a loved one.  The squad welcomes such contributions and has special programs and recognitions in which donors may participate. Drop us a note or contact one of our officers if you are interested in providing special support.

The other source of revenue comes from the Borough of Shrewsbury which offers financial support to the squad in three ways.  First and foremost the Borough purchases the two ambulances used by the Squad and provides insurance on the vehicles.  Second, the Borough supports a portion of the Squad’s annual equipment purchases, especially those related to maintaining the ambulances.  Third, the Borough pays for the utilities at the Squad building including electricity, gas, water, telephone and sewer expenses.  Without financial support from the Borough, the Squad could not continue to operate.
